Buying and selling used gold: a reliable guide combining transparency and vintage charm

April brings with it a desire to declutter: we update our wardrobe and take a closer look at that jewelry box… maybe there’s that brooch from your aunt that you never wear, or those mismatched earrings lying at the bottom.

Selling used gold isn’t just a way to make money—it’s a conscious choice. It’s about breathing new life into something that’s been sitting idle, transforming the “old” into a new fashion opportunity or an investment for the future. But how can you do it safely?

Investment gold or used jewelry: what’s the difference?

People often get confused, but the distinction is crucial. There are two categories of gold:

  • Investment gold comes in the form of coins and bars, which have a minimum purity of 99.5%. Currently, there are no taxes on the purchase or ownership of investment gold, but when you sell it, a capital gains tax (at a rate of 26%) applies to the profit generated by the difference between the sale price and the purchase price. A friendly tip: always keep your receipt! If you can’t find it, the tax will be applied to the full sale price.

  • Used gold (jewelry): Jewelry is never made of pure gold. It is typically 18-karat (750 parts per thousand), meaning that 75% of the piece is gold, while the remainder consists of other metal alloys. However, there is also jewelry with lower karat weights, such as 14-karat (585 parts per thousand – 58.5%) or 9-karat (375 parts per thousand – 37.5%). In addition to the market price of gold, the value of the jewelry is influenced by the item’s weight, the gold’s karat weight, and whether or not it contains precious stones.

Where can I safely sell gold in Milan? Check the OAM Registry

Security isn’t optional, especially when it comes to gold. To sleep soundly, the golden rule (to stay on topic!) is to rely ONLY on businesses listed in the OAM Registry.

In light of the above, contact a Professional Gold Dealer (OPO) to buy or sell investment gold (they are the only ones authorized to do so); for buying and selling jewelry, contact a Gold Buyer (OCO).

You can use the following links to check whether these businesses are registered and therefore operating legally:

Ledial Srl is registered as a Professional Gold Dealer (OPO No. 286) and a Gold Buyer (OCO No. 236).

The Best Gold Buying Shops in Milan: How to Spot Them?

What makes a store stand out? It’s not just about the weight per gram: look for a place where they explain the process to you, weigh the jewelry right in front of you, and answer all your questions and concerns. Milan is full of gold-buying shops, but trust is earned through transparency: real-time appraisals, visible weighing, and traceable payments are our guarantee.

Why is secondhand jewelry the future of fashion?

Buying vintage jewelry isn’t just a bargain—it’s a choice made out of love for the planet. Participating in the circular economy means not extracting new gold, but valuing what already exists—often featuring designs and artisanal craftsmanship that are hard to find today. Wearing a ring from the 1970s or a gold chain from the early 1900s means wearing a piece of history. It is luxury that doesn’t burden the environment, but shines with a unique and conscious light.
